History
The attorneys at Sholes & Miller, LLP have been serving the legal needs of healthcare providers, businesses and individuals the Mid-Hudson Valley for many years. Our most experienced attorney has been in practice more than 28 years. The average experience of our four attorneys is almost 19 years. Our youngest attorney has been in practice more than thirteen years. The firm of Sholes & Miller, LLP was founded in the year 2000. As the new century began, so did the most recent of successful partnerships between Sarah Sholes and Robert Miller. Prior to that, they were partners at another law firm. Mr. Miller’s vast experience in health care, health law and the defense of medical malpractice lawsuits, as well as Ms. Sholes’ extensive experience in numerous types of complex litigation have made Sholes & Miller a reputable source of legal counsel in the region.
The firm’s early years focused on the representation of health care professionals and facilities at trials and administrative hearings as well as other professional matters. Since the practice met with great early success, many of those same clients have looked to Sholes & Miller for additional services, seeking more general, legal counsel related to health law, business law, commercial real estate transactions, employment agreements, commercial contracts and disputes. As a result, the practice has evolved into a provider of a variety of general legal services with an emphasis on medical and hospital malpractice defense and other litigation.
As Sholes & Miller expanded its services, the practice outgrew its original small offices in Staatsburg, East Fishkill and Fishkill, New York and, in March 2006, moved to its present location in a newly-refurbished, historic brick building in the City of Poughkeepsie.
Sholes & Miller continues to employ highly qualified people who work at our offices. Our newest addition is Susanne R. Vaeth. Susanne is our firm administrator. She has a Bachelor's degree in Information Management and an MBA in Accounting. This, along with six years of prior law firm administrator experience from New York City, make her a great addition to our firm.
When you call Sholes & Miller, LLP you may hear the calming voice of Daniel Barkin, our senior legal assistant. Daniel worked many years at a law firm in Toronto before coming to Sholes & Miller, LLP. His demeanor, attention to detail and good sense of humor are often commented upon very faborably by our clients and others who have the pleasure of dealing with Daniel.
Our staff also includes our very experienced and highly skilled legal secretary, Camille Scelzo. Our paralegal is Renee Randone. Renee has a Master's degree from SUNY Geneseo and has completed an ABA approved course in paralegal studies. Chrissy Peppe is our legal assistant. She has her Bachelor's degree in History from Mount Saint Mary College. Rounding out the staff is Donny Heckle, a well-trained mechanic who helps maintain our facilities and also serves as a courier and process server for the firm.
